About
Chlorpropamide (inn) is a cosmetic ingredient. Raw material is classified as a suspected carcinogen. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Chlorpropamide (CAS 94-20-2) is a first-generation sulfonylurea used orally for type 2 diabetes management. EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III restricts its use to concentrations below 0.1% as a constituent of substances or mixtures. The compound functions as an insulin secretagogue, lowering blood glucose levels. Cosmetic use could lead to unintended systemic absorption and pharmacological effects including severe hypoglycemia, particularly dangerous in diabetic patients. The compound carries hazard statements H312+H332 (harmful in contact with skin or if inhaled) and H351 (suspected of causing cancer).
Known concerns
- Restricted to <0.1% in EU mixtures
- Hypoglycemia risk from systemic absorption
- Phototoxicity concern
- Suspected carcinogen (H351)
- Potential drug interactions with oral hypoglycemics
