Disodium Sitostereth-14 Sulfosuccinate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
This is one of the more distinctive ingredients in this batch — a sulfosuccinate where the alkyl chain is a stigmast-5-en-3-beta-yl (sitosteryl) group, essentially a phytosterol. Plant sterols like sitosterol are structurally similar to skin lipids (including cholesterol) and integrate well with the skin barrier, potentially enhancing tolerability. The 14-mol EO group provides substantial water solubility. Sitosterol-derived ingredients are not restricted under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Phytosterols themselves have a strong safety record in topical applications and are actually beneficial for skin barrier function.
Skin benefits
- Sitosterol moiety is barrier-compatible and may reinforce the stratum corneum
- High EO chain provides excellent water solubility and formulation flexibility
Known concerns
- Complex structure means more extensive purification may be required during manufacturing
- Very high EO (14 mol) — residual 1,4-dioxane requires standard monitoring
