About
Meradimate (menthyl anthranilate) — a UVA absorber approved as sunscreen in the US but not in the EU.
Menthyl anthranilate (CAS 134-09-8), trade name Meradimate, is the menthyl ester of anthranilic acid. It absorbs primarily in the UVA2 range (320-340 nm). It is approved by the US FDA as a sunscreen active at up to 5% under the OTC Sunscreen Monograph. It is NOT listed in EU Annex VI, so it cannot be used as a UV filter in EU cosmetics. Published CIR and FDA data support skin tolerance at approved use levels, but it is considered weaker than modern UV filters and has been de-prioritised in most formulations. No significant endocrine or photostability concerns in published literature. Previous internal score of 92 overstated the strength of this filter.
