About

Kava root extract, a traditional Polynesian botanical used in cosmetics for its calming and skin-clarifying properties.

Piper methysticum (kava) contains kavalactones (kawain, dihydrokawain, etc.) which have been associated with rare but serious hepatotoxicity (including hepatitis and liver failure) in European pharmacovigilance data. The EU has banned kava-containing food supplements and restricted medicinal use. Under EU Regulation 1223/2009, kava is not explicitly listed in cosmetic annexes, but its known hepatotoxic potential and regulatory history in related product categories represent a significant concern. SCCS has not issued a favourable opinion for cosmetic use.

Skin benefits

  • Topical use in traditional Pacific medicine for skin conditions
  • Kavalactones have local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties

Known concerns

  • Documented hepatotoxicity with rare but serious liver injury cases; EU health advisories in place
  • Not approved as a food supplement in EU due to liver risk
  • Regulatory uncertainty; potential future EU cosmetic restriction
