Also known as Geranylgeranylacetone — an oral anti-ulcer medication being explored in topical skincare for its ability to induce heat shock proteins and support skin barrier function.
Teprenone (Geranylgeranylacetone, GGA) is a polyisoprenoid originally developed as an oral anti-ulcer drug (marketed in Japan). It is known to induce heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expression, which plays a protective role against cellular stress. Topical application research is emerging but still limited. It is not a standard cosmetic ingredient and is not listed in EU CosIng or restricted Annexes, placing it in the 'novel/novel use' category.
Skin benefits
- May induce HSP70 for cellular stress protection
- Potential anti-aging and barrier-supporting properties (emerging research)
Known concerns
- Limited topical safety data
- Primarily an oral drug with unknown dermal absorption profile
- Novel cosmetic application with unconfirmed long-term safety
