About

A cosmetic ingredient. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Urginea scilla (sea squill) contains cardiac glycosides including scillarenin that affect cardiac rhythm by inhibiting Na+/K+ ATPase. EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II prohibits the use of this plant material and its galenical preparations in cosmetic products due to the narrow margin between therapeutic and toxic doses. Ingestion of small amounts can cause serious cardiac arrhythmias, and cutaneous absorption of cardiac glycosides poses significant risk especially in individuals with cardiac conditions.

Known concerns

  • EU Annex II banned - toxic plant material
  • Cardiac glycoside content causes serious arrhythmias
  • Narrow therapeutic index - risk of fatal poisoning
  • No safe concentration for cosmetic use
