An optical brightener and fluorescent whitening agent used in cosmetics and textiles that is classified as potentially hazardous to aquatic life (H413) and faces increasing regulatory scrutiny in the EU.

Bis-(t-Butyl Benzoxazolyl) Thiophene (also known as 2,5-bis(2-benzoxazolyl)thiophene or BBOT) is a fluorescent whitening agent (FWA) belonging to the benzoxazole class. It absorbs UV-A radiation and re-emits in the visible blue range, producing a brightening effect. The compound carries an H413 hazard statement (may cause long-lasting harmful effects to aquatic life) under CLP. EU REACH requires registration for substances manufactured or imported above 1 tonne/year, and substances with H413 classification face potential restriction under the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and REACH authorisation processes for PBT-like substances.
