An ethoxylated fatty alcohol used as an emulsifier — helps oil and water mix smoothly in creams and lotions. Generally well-tolerated on skin.

Cetoleth-5 is a polyethylene glycol ether of C16-C18 unsaturated alcohols with an average of 5 moles of ethylene oxide. It functions primarily as a nonionic emulsifier and solubilizer in cosmetic formulations. Like other low-EO ethoxylated alcohols, it provides moderate emulsification while maintaining a relatively mild skin interaction profile. Limited dedicated toxicological studies exist, but the broader class of ceteth/cetoleth emulsifiers has been reviewed by CIR and found safe as used.
