A water-soluble aromatic distillate from the peel of the Citrus unshiu × Citrus aurantium hybrid, used as a fragrance component and skin-toning agent in cosmetics.

Citrus peel waters are obtained by steam distillation of citrus fruit peel and contain volatile aromatic compounds including limonene, linalool, and aldehydes. Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) peel contains furanocoumarins such as bergapten and 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP), which are listed in EU Annex III with restrictions on maximum concentration in cosmetic products. The steam distillation process significantly reduces the furanocoumarin concentration compared to cold-pressed peel oils, but residual amounts may still be present. Allergenic linalool and limonene are listed as fragrance allergens under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III.
