Glyceryl Montanate (CAS 68476-38-0) is the glyceryl ester of montan wax fatty acids, produced by esterifying the long-chain carboxylic acids derived from montan wax (a fossilized plant wax) with glycerol. The resulting ingredient has lipophilic properties and functions as a viscosity-increasing agent and emollient. Montan wax itself is obtained from lignite coal. The ingredient has no GHS hazard classification and is listed in CosIng with no restrictions, though it is not among the most thoroughly toxicologically evaluated cosmetic ingredients.
