Laureth-14 (CAS 9002-92-0) is the polyethylene glycol ether of lauryl alcohol (C12) with an average of 14 ethylene oxide units, functioning as a nonionic surfactant, emulsifier, and cleansing agent in cosmetic formulations. The ethoxylation of fatty alcohols reduces oil-water interfacial tension effectively while being milder than anionic surfactants. EU cosmetic inventory lists this substance as permitted without specific concentration limits; however, the SCCS has noted concerns about potential contamination with 1,4-dioxane (a potential carcinogen) in ethoxylated surfactants and requires purity specifications. At typical use levels in rinse-off products, it is considered safe with good skin compatibility.
