Methoxy PEG-45/Polyepsilon Caprolactone is a block copolymer consisting of a methoxy-terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain of approximately 45 ethylene oxide units linked to a polyepsilon caprolactone polyester block of approximately 38 repeating units. The PEG block provides hydrophilicity and moisture-binding properties while the PCL block contributes lipophilicity and emolliency. This amphiphilic structure makes it effective at the skin lipid interface. The high molecular weight of this copolymer means it does not penetrate deep into skin and is not readily absorbed systemically. Generally regarded as safe in cosmetic use, though very high molecular weight polymers are sometimes contaminated with residual monomers.
