A hydrotreated heavy petroleum naphtha with potential benzene above the 0.1% threshold, prohibited for cosmetic use under EU Annex II due to its carcinogenic aromatic content.

Heavy hydrotreated naphtha is produced by hydrogenation of heavy petroleum fractions to reduce sulfur and unsaturated compounds. Despite hydrotreatment, residual benzene can persist above the 0.1% regulatory trigger. The heavy naphtha matrix contains C7–C12 alkanes and cycloalkanes with residual aromatic content. EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 prohibits cosmetic use of any stream with detectable benzene above this threshold.
