A high molecular weight PEG ester (20 EO units) of stearic acid, used as an emollient and viscosity-controlling agent; the extended PEG chain provides excellent water dispersibility and skin tolerability.

PEG-20 Distearate is the polyethylene glycol-20 diester of stearic acid. With an average of 20 EO units (approximate MW ~1,000 Da), this is a high-MW PEG ester with excellent water solubility. The long PEG chain dominates the physicochemical profile, making it effectively non-absorbed through the skin. Stearic acid is a common, safe fatty acid. PEG-20 Distearate is not listed on EU Annex II or III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. The diester structure is relatively stable at typical cosmetic pH (4–8). Residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane should be monitored per SCCS guidance for polymers with moderate EO content. The substance is widely used in cosmetic emulsions as an emollient and opacifying agent.
