Formoterol is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Formoterol is a long-acting β2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) administered via inhalation for the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Its pharmacological activity as a bronchodilator with cardiovascular effects is entirely unrelated to cosmetic function. The EU Cosmetics Regulation does not list formoterol in any authorized ingredient list; as a prescription-only medicine with significant cardiovascular activity, it cannot be considered compatible with cosmetic safety requirements. Topical application of LABAs carries risk of systemic absorption and cardiovascular effects.
Known concerns
- Prescription-only long-acting bronchodilator
- Cardiovascular activity – risk of tachycardia, arrhythmia
- No cosmetic regulatory approval
- Pharmacological activity incompatible with cosmetic use
