About

A cationic-modified rice starch (lauryl-quat hydroxypropyl ether). Soft conditioning film for hair and skin; mild eye-irritation caveat.

Laurdimonium hydroxypropyl rice starch is rice starch chemically modified with hydroxypropyl groups bearing a lauryl-dimethylammonium (cationic) head group. The cationic charge gives it conditioning affinity to hair and skin, while the starch backbone delivers a soft, powdery skin feel and modest film-forming function. It is used in dry shampoos, conditioners, and color cosmetics. CIR has reviewed similar quat-modified starches as safe at typical concentrations; quaternary ammonium fragments can be mildly eye-irritating, especially at higher levels. No CMR or endocrine concerns identified.
