About

Powder from Japanese butterbur (fuki). The plant genus contains liver-toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids — cosmetic grade needs verified PA-free processing.

Petasites japonicus (fuki, Japanese butterbur, CAS 91845-41-9 for the ingredient) is a traditional East Asian food and herbal plant. The genus Petasites is well known to contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), including senkirkine and petasitenine, which are hepatotoxic and classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). EMA and several national regulators require oral Petasites products to be certified PA-free. For cosmetic use, dermal absorption of PAs is less characterized but non-zero, and a whole-plant powder carries a higher PA load than purified extracts. Unless the supplier provides PA-free certification, cosmetic use should be treated with caution.
