About
Ground lemon peel. Pleasant and antioxidant-rich, but it contains furocoumarins that can cause nasty sunburn-type reactions on sun-exposed skin.
Citrus limon peel powder is mechanically milled lemon peel, containing the essential oil (rich in d-limonene, beta-pinene, gamma-terpinene, citral) along with flavonoids and pectin. The principal cosmetic concern is furocoumarins — psoralen-family compounds (notably bergapten, xanthotoxin) that are photosensitizers capable of causing phytophotodermatitis (severe sunburn-pattern reactions with long-lasting hyperpigmentation) when skin is subsequently UV-exposed. Limonene, linalool, and citral are common fragrance allergens and must be declared under EU Annex III if thresholds are exceeded. The IFRA/SCCS approach for citrus oils is to limit furocoumarin content in leave-on products (typically ≤1 ppm bergapten in finished product for some citrus oils). Raw peel powder has the full native furocoumarin load, so leave-on use on sun-exposed areas is not advised; rinse-off (soap, scrub) at low inclusion is lower-risk.
