About
Phenacetin is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Phenacetin is an older analgesic and antipyretic drug (p-phenetidin derivative) that was widely used in headache and pain remedies but was withdrawn from pharmaceutical markets due to severe adverse effects including nephrotoxicity (analgesic nephropathy), methemoglobinemia, and carcinogenicity. It is classified as a Category 1B carcinogen under EU CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, substances classified as CMR (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, or Reprotoxic) Category 1A or 1B under CLP are prohibited in cosmetic products — phenacetin is banned in cosmetics in all EU member states.
