About
Prenalterol is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Prenalterol (INN) is a synthetic phenethylamine derivative functioning as a selective beta-1 adrenoceptor agonist. It was investigated as a cardiotonic agent for heart failure but its development was limited by tachyphylaxis and safety concerns. As a pharmacological agent with no history of cosmetic use and significant cardiovascular activity, it would be prohibited under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Article 14, which prohibits substances with pharmacological or immunological action intended to modify physiological functions.
Known concerns
- Pharmaceutical drug with beta-1 agonist activity — prohibited cosmetic ingredient
- Cardiovascular effects (positive inotropy, tachycardia risk)
- No safety assessment for cosmetic topical use
- Likely classified as a substance with pharmacological action under EU cosmetics law
