A silky polysaccharide from the blue-green algae Aphanothece sacrum — forms a smooth, protective film on skin that locks in moisture while letting it breathe.

Aphanothece sacrum polysaccharides are sulfated heteropolysaccharides isolated from Aphanothece sacrum, a species of cyanobacteria (blue-green alga) historically consumed as a traditional food in Japan known as 'OKIENTO'. The polysaccharide fraction consists of repeating units of sulfated glucuronic acid, rhamnose, and xylose with molecular weights typically in the range of 10-100 kDa. The sulfate groups (O-sulfate esters) give the molecule a high negative charge density, enabling strong hydration through hydrogen bonding with water molecules. On skin, this creates a hydrophilic film that reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) while allowing normal perspiration. The uronic acid residues provide some ionic interaction with the stratum corneum, enhancing substantivity and a smooth after-feel.
