A family of macrocyclic glycouril-based host molecules that can encapsulate fragrance molecules, active ingredients, and preservatives, potentially improving formulation stability and controlled release.

Cucurbiturils are cyclic oligomers of glycouril bridged by methylene groups, with cavity sizes that can host small to medium-sized organic molecules. They are among the newer excipients in cosmetic science, primarily used for fragrance stabilisation and controlled delivery of actives. Their macrocyclic structure renders them chemically inert and of low toxicity; oral and dermal studies in rodents have shown minimal adverse effects.
