A kojic acid derivative used as a skin-lightening agent that addresses the stability concerns of free kojic acid while maintaining tyrosinase-inhibiting activity.

Kojic isopalmitate is an esterified derivative of kojic acid, designed to improve the stability and skin penetration of the parent compound. Kojic acid itself is a naturally derived tyrosinase inhibitor used for skin brightening but has stability and sensitization concerns; esterification mitigates some of these. CosIng lists this derivative without specific restriction under Annexes I–III. The isopalmitate ester has better lipid solubility, improving delivery. While kojic acid has been reviewed for safety, the derivative form has a more favorable profile with lower direct irritation potential.
