About
A primary amine and ethoxylate that can act as a pH adjuster or fragrance intermediate, but raises concerns for nitrosamine formation.
2-(2-Aminoethoxy)ethanol is an alkanolamine used as an intermediate in cosmetic and industrial chemical synthesis. It is not listed in EU Cosmetics Regulation Annexes II or III, but primary and secondary amines are subject to nitrosamine formation concerns under REACH. The presence of both an amine and ethoxylate functionality creates a risk of forming N-nitroso compounds when in contact with nitrosating agents. This has led to restrictions on similar amines in cosmetic formulations.
Known concerns
- Risk of nitrosamine formation when combined with nitrosating agents
- May cause skin and respiratory irritation
- Not permitted in cosmetic products where nitrosation can occur
