About
A dimethylphenol — corrosive, acutely toxic by skin contact and ingestion. In the cresol/xylenol class of industrial phenolics that are not appropriate for cosmetic use.
2,4-Xylenol (2,4-dimethylphenol, CAS 105-67-9) is a dimethyl-substituted phenol in the cresol/xylenol family. It is widely recognized as corrosive and systemically toxic: standard GHS classifications include skin corrosion Category 1B (H314), acute toxicity Category 3 by oral/dermal/inhalation (H301/H311/H331), and acute aquatic toxicity. Substituted phenols penetrate skin efficiently and cause systemic phenolic toxicity including CNS depression and methemoglobinemia. No CIR/SCCS monograph supports cosmetic use. Potentially present only as a trace impurity in some natural extracts; not an intentional cosmetic fragrance material at meaningful levels.
