2,6-Dinitrotoluene — an explosives/TDI-intermediate chemical. Carcinogen, mutagen, reprotoxic — EU Annex II banned in cosmetics.
2,6-Dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT, CAS 606-20-2) is one of the dinitrotoluene isomers used as a precursor in toluene diisocyanate (TDI) production for polyurethanes and historically as an explosive constituent. EU CLP classifies it as a Category 1B carcinogen (H350), Category 1B germ-cell mutagen (H340), and Category 2 reproductive toxicant (H361f); IARC places the DNT mixture and 2,6-isomer in Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans). Acute oral toxicity is moderate (H301), with documented haematotoxicity (methaemoglobinaemia) and hepatic effects on chronic exposure. EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Annex II prohibits it in cosmetics. Industrial chemical only.
