About
2-ACETONAPHTHONE is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulation. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
2-Acetonaphthone (methyl 2-naphthyl ketone, CAS 93-08-3, PubChem CID 7122) is an aromatic ketone with an orange blossom/sweet powdery fragrance profile. It has been used in perfumery and as a flavouring agent. While it appears on some GHS classifications for acute toxicity (oral, Category 4) and skin/eye irritation, it is used at very low fragrance concentrations in cosmetics where these effects are negligible. RIFM has assessed it as acceptable for fragrance use within recommended limits. No EU Annex restrictions, though some regulatory caution exists for aromatic ketones generally.
Known concerns
- Acute oral toxicity (GHS Category 4) — not relevant at fragrance levels
- Potential skin and eye irritation at high concentrations
- Limited comprehensive safety data compared to more common fragrances
- Aromatic ketone — metabolic fate not fully characterised
