About
2-DECENAL is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulation. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
2-Decenal is an unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde functioning as a fragrance ingredient with a characteristic citrus, aldehydic, and coriander-like odor. It is not listed in EU Annexes II or III. Like other unsaturated aldehydes, it presents challenges for cosmetic formulation due to the potential for oxidation and peroxidation, which can generate contact allergens during storage. IFRA has evaluated similar unsaturated aldehydes and recommends antioxidant preservation. The compound occurs naturally in essential oils of citrus and coriander.
Skin benefits
- Provides fresh citrus aldehydic fragrance character
- Natural component of many citrus essential oils
Known concerns
- Prone to peroxidation generating contact allergens during storage
- Mild skin sensitization potential from aldehyde reactivity
- Requires antioxidant preservation in formulations
