About
An aromatic thiol (sulfur-containing compound) with a coffee-like odor, used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumery at very low concentrations.
2-Furylmethanethiol (furfuryl mercaptan) is an aromatic thiol with a powerful, unpleasant odor at high concentrations but a pleasant coffee-like character at very low dilution, used as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetic products. It is not listed in EU Annexes II or III. Thiols are generally more reactive and potentially more toxic than their alcohol counterparts, but the extreme odor potency ensures only trace use levels. The compound has been evaluated by IFRA for safe use in fragrance compositions, and at the very low concentrations typical of fragrance use, systemic exposure and toxicity risk are minimal.
Skin benefits
- Provides distinctive warm, roasted fragrance notes at trace levels
Known concerns
- Extremely potent odor requiring very low use concentrations
- Limited independent toxicological assessment data
- May cause respiratory irritation at higher airborne concentrations
