About
A methyleugenol/isoeugenol-family fragrance acetate. The methyl eugenol parent class is EU-restricted and IARC 2B — cosmetic use is highly limited.
2-Methoxy-4-prop-1-enylphenyl acetate (CAS 93-29-8), commonly isoeugenyl acetate or isoeugenol methyl ether acetate depending on isomer, sits in the methyl eugenol / isoeugenol family of phenylpropene fragrance materials. Methyl eugenol is classified by IARC as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) based on rodent hepatocarcinogenicity, and EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex II prohibits methyl eugenol except as a naturally-occurring trace in essential oils, with strict low-ppm caps in finished product. Isoeugenol is on the EU 26-allergens disclosure list. The acetate ester can hydrolyse to release the allergenic/carcinogenic phenol in vivo. Cosmetic use is therefore highly restricted and problematic.
