2-Methoxypropanol (propylene glycol methyl ether, PGME) is classified under REACH as a substance of concern for reproductive toxicity (Repr. Cat. 2; R61). It readily penetrates the skin and has been associated with developmental effects in animal studies at concentrations above 5%. EU cosmetic regulation does not specifically ban it but its use in leave-on products is discouraged.
