About

2-METHYLNAPHTHALENE is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulation. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

2-Methylnaphthalene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with a characteristic naphthalene-like odor used historically as a synthetic musk fragrance ingredient. PAHs as a class are subject to significant regulatory scrutiny due to known and suspected carcinogenic activity. While 2-methylnaphthalene itself is not specifically listed in EU Annex II, the broader concern about PAHs in cosmetic products has led to restrictions on several PAH-containing fragrance materials. The SCCS has expressed concern about PAH contamination in cosmetic products, and the EU Cosmetics Regulation requires that cosmetic products do not contain substances classified as CMR Category 1A or 1B under CLP.

Known concerns

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) class concern
  • Known naphthalene structure raises carcinogenicity concern
  • CMR regulatory scrutiny as PAH class member
  • Environmental persistence and aquatic toxicity
