About
A simple branched-chain aldehyde with a pungent, fruity odor that occurs naturally and is used as a fragrance and flavoring ingredient.
2-Methylpropanal (isobutyl aldehyde) is a branched aliphatic aldehyde functioning as a fragrance and flavoring ingredient. It occurs naturally in many essential oils and foods. It is not listed in EU Annexes II or III and has low acute toxicity. The compound is rapidly metabolized through pathways similar to other aldehydes. While aldehydes can be reactive on skin, the small molecular size and volatility of 2-methylpropanal limit skin penetration and residence time, reducing sensitization risk. It has been evaluated by FEMA and IFRA as safe for use at low concentrations.

- Contributes to fruity, fresh fragrance compositions
Known concerns
- Pungent odor requiring low use concentrations
