About

A conjugated dienol (E,Z-nonadienol) with an intense green cucumber-melon odor used as a fragrance key note for fresh aquatic scents; the conjugated diene system introduces mild sensitization concerns similar to other alkenyl alcohols.

Trans-2,cis-6-Nonadienol is an unsaturated C9 aliphatic alcohol with a characteristic intense green, cucumber, and watermelon odor. It is structurally similar to the naturally occurring C6 and C9 alcohols in cucumber and melons. The trans, cis conjugated diene system is somewhat more reactive than isolated double bonds, giving mild sensitization potential comparable to other unsaturated alcohols.

Skin benefits

  • Provides powerful green, cucumber, and melon fragrance notes highly valued in aquatic and fresh scent compositions
  • Natural component of cucumber and many gourds used in cosmetic formulations

Known concerns

  • Conjugated diene introduces mild sensitization potential over other alkenyl alcohols
  • Alkenyl alcohol susceptible to oxidation and hydroperoxide formation
  • Limited specific toxicological data for this compound
