About
2H-1-Benzopyran-2-one is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulation. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
2H-1-Benzopyran-2-one (Coumarin) is a benzopyrone (chromen-2-one) lactone with a characteristic sweet, vanilla-like odor. While naturally occurring in many plants, synthetic coumarin is used in cosmetics. It is not listed in EU Annex II (banned substances) or Annex III (restricted substances) of the Cosmetics Regulation, indicating permitted use. However, coumarin has been associated with hepatotoxicity at high doses, and the SCCS has assessed its skin sensitization potential. The lactone ring can undergo metabolic hydrolysis.
