Mescaline (3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine) is a phenethylamine alkaloid and serotonergic hallucinogen found in peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii) and other cacti. It is controlled under international drug conventions (UN 1961 Single Convention) and EU regulations. EU Annex III restricts its use in cosmetic products at ≥0.1% concentration. Its pharmacological activity as a 5-HT2A agonist with psychoactive properties makes cosmetic use entirely inappropriate.
