About 3 and 4-(4-Hydroxy-4-methylpentyl)cyclohex-3-ene-1-carbaldehyde

A fragrance compound (also called Lyral or Liral) banned in EU cosmetics since 2021 due to its high sensitisation risk — it is one of the most frequently reported allergy-causing chemicals in Europe.

Detailed Analysis

4-(4-Hydroxy-4-methylpentyl)cyclohex-3-ene-1-carbaldehyde (HICC, CAS 31906-04-4 and 51414-25-6) is a synthetic fragrance aldehyde. The SCCS identified HICC as a priority allergen, concluding that its use poses an unacceptable high risk of sensitisation in consumers. EU Regulation 2021/1902 (amending 1223/2009) banned HICC in cosmetic products from 31 May 2021. H317 (skin sensitisation), H412 (aquatic chronic toxicity), and H362 (effects on or via breast milk) are the classified hazards driving its prohibition.

Known Concerns

  • H317 — confirmed skin sensitiser (high frequency of allergic contact dermatitis)
  • H362 — may cause effects on or via breast milk
  • H412 — harmful to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects
  • EU Annex II banned — prohibited in all cosmetic products since 2021
