A methylated quinoline — the quinoline family carries genotoxicity and rodent carcinogenicity signals. Orange on structural-class caution.
6-Methylquinoline (CAS 91-62-3) is a methyl-substituted quinoline used in perfumery for leathery, earthy, tobacco notes. The parent quinoline has been evaluated by IARC and NTP with evidence of hepatocarcinogenicity in rodents and positive genotoxicity in multiple assays. Methylation does not remove the underlying ring system reactivity relevant to those findings. GHS classifications include acute oral toxicity and skin/eye irritation. Public CIR/SCCS monographs are limited. Under RIFM/IFRA, quinoline-type materials are managed at low use percentages; conservative cosmetic assessment places the material in the orange tier rather than a default-yellow.
