About

An acetylated derivative of the amino acid arginine that may penetrate skin better than regular arginine. Both arginine and its acetylated form are well-regarded in skincare.

N-acetyl-L-arginine is the acetylated derivative of L-arginine, where the alpha-amino group is blocked by an acetyl group. This modification increases lipophilicity and may enhance skin penetration compared to free arginine. Arginine is involved in nitric oxide synthesis, wound healing, and collagen formation in skin. The acetyl derivative may function as a skin-conditioning agent while potentially offering improved delivery. N-acetylarginine occurs naturally in some biological systems and is structurally related to other N-acetyl amino acids used in cosmetics. The compound is generally regarded as safe in cosmetic applications.

Skin benefits

  • May provide improved skin penetration vs. unmodified arginine
  • Arginine supports collagen synthesis and wound healing
  • Skin-conditioning properties
  • Supports skin barrier function

Known concerns

  • Generally well tolerated; rare allergic response possible in sensitized individuals
