About

Denatured alcohol used as a solvent and antimicrobial agent in cosmetics, but its drying and irritant properties limit use in sensitive formulations.

SD Alcohol 1 is ethyl alcohol denatured with methyl alcohol and a denatonium benzoate, MIBK, nitropropane, or methyl n-butyl ketone co-denaturant, in accordance with US ATF 27CFR21 regulations. Used in cosmetics as a volatile solvent, antimicrobial, and viscosity-reducing agent. The denaturation makes it non-beverageable but does not eliminate inherent risks of ethanol including mucosal irritation, drieskin barrier disruption, and potential for systemic absorption. EU cosmetics allow denatured alcohol but restrict leave-on concentrations.

Skin benefits

  • Antimicrobial preservative in aqueous cosmetic formulations
  • Volatile solvent improving product feel and quick-dry properties

Known concerns

  • Skin barrier disruption and drying with prolonged use
  • Mucosal/respiratory irritant at high concentrations
  • Flammability risk
  • May enhance penetration of other ingredients
