About
Protoplasts (cell wall-free plant cells) derived from Aloe arborescens leaves, used as a highly bioavailable form of aloe in advanced skincare.
Aloe arborescens protoplasts are cells that have had their cell walls removed, making their contents directly bioavailable. Aloe arborescens is used in traditional wound healing and is chemically similar to A. barbadensis. EU Regulation 1223/2009 does not restrict Aloe arborescens-derived ingredients. The protoplast form may pose slightly higher allergenic potential due to direct cytoplasmic exposure, warranting patch testing in sensitive individuals. CAS 223747-76-0.
Skin benefits
- Higher bioavailability of aloe bioactives due to absent cell wall
- Retains antioxidant and wound-healing properties of Aloe arborescens
Known concerns
- Protoplast form may increase exposure to intracellular compounds including anthraquinones
- Sensitization potential slightly elevated vs. whole plant extracts
