About
A sandalwood-derived fragrance ingredient with a warm, woody scent and generally favorable safety profile, though similar sensitizing constituents exist.
Alpha-santalyl butyrate is a sandalwood-type fragrance derived from alpha-santalol (the primary aromatic component of sandalwood oil) esterified with butyric acid. The compound reproduces the warm, woody, creamy odor profile of natural East Indian sandalwood (Santalum album). It is used as a substitute for or component of sandalwood fragrance compositions. Alpha-santalol and related santalyl compounds have been reviewed by IFRA and are permitted for cosmetic fragrance use with no EU Annex II or III restrictions currently in place. The PubChem safety score of 80 reflects its status as a non-restricted fragrance ingredient with a history of safe use.
