A group of metal stearate salts (aluminium, zinc, magnesium, calcium) widely used as opacifiers, thickeners, and pigment dispersants in cosmetics.
Aluminium, zinc, magnesium and calcium stearates are a group of metal salts of stearic acid used extensively in cosmetics for their opacifying, thickening, and pigment-wetting properties. Aluminium stearate (CAS 7047-84-9) is used in emulsions and powders; zinc stearate (CAS 557-05-1) is widely used in powders and colour cosmetics; calcium stearate (CAS 1592-23-0) is used as a tabletting aid and opacifier. All are listed in EU CosIng without restrictions and are considered safe for cosmetic use.
