Amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) is an ISO-named herbicide prohibited from use in cosmetic products under EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. It is classified as a Category 2 suspected carcinogen under EU CLP Regulation and has been evaluated by IARC as Group 2A (probably carcinogenic to humans). Amitrole inhibits thyroid hormone synthesis and is listed on EU REACH Authorisation List (Annex XIV), effectively eliminating its use in consumer products. The substance is also toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
