About
An ammonium alkyl-sulfate surfactant — solid cleansing power but notably defatting, much like SLS. Fine in well-designed rinse-off only.
Ammonium C12-13 alkyl sulfate (CAS 68081-96-9) is an anionic surfactant of the alkyl-sulfate class, closely related to ammonium lauryl sulfate. CIR has assessed the class (ALS, SLS, ammonium alkyl sulfates) as safe in rinse-off formulations and safe in leave-on only at low concentrations. Documented skin- and eye-irritation potential is substantial in leave-on use. Not ethoxylated, so no 1,4-dioxane concern, but strips sebum and proteins aggressively. No EU CosIng restriction, but formulators typically buffer it with co-surfactants to reduce irritation.
Skin benefits
- Effective foaming surfactant
- Good detergency on sebum and soils
- Established industry use
Known concerns
- Alkyl-sulfate class — moderate to strong skin and eye irritation
- Can compromise skin barrier with extended leave-on use
- Generally acceptable only in rinse-off at modest levels
- Not recommended for sensitive or compromised skin
