About
Bai zhi root powder, a traditional Chinese medicinal root containing furanocoumarins that offer skin-brightening but require sun-exposure precautions.
Angelica dahurica (bai zhi) root is a well-known TCM botanical containing furanocoumarins such as imperatorin, isoimperatorin, and byakangelicin. Furanocoumarins are listed in EU Annex III of Regulation 1223/2009, which restricts their use in cosmetic products, particularly those applied to sun-exposed skin, due to photosensitisation and photocarcinogenesis risk. Maximum concentrations and product-type restrictions apply. Formulators must comply with these limits, and use in rinse-off products or products protected from UV exposure is preferred.
Skin benefits
- Imperatorin and byakangelicin inhibit tyrosinase for skin brightening
- Traditional use for acne and skin brightening in TCM
- Anti-inflammatory activity reduces skin redness
Known concerns
- Furanocoumarins are EU Annex III restricted; photosensitisation and photocarcinogenesis risk
- Maximum concentration limits apply for sun-exposure product categories
- Advisable to use in rinse-off or UV-protected formulations only
