About
A seaweed hydrosol from Ascophyllum nodosum — a common North Atlantic brown algae used widely in cosmetics for its mineral-rich, antioxidant profile that conditions and protects skin.
Ascophyllum nodosum is a large, perennial brown alga ( Phaeophyceae) abundant along the North Atlantic coastlines of Europe and North America, forming extensive intertidal seaweed beds. Ascophyllum nodosum Water is the aqueous solution collected from steam distillation of the algae, capturing the water-soluble bioactive compounds in the hydrosol fraction. Brown algae of this type are rich in phlorotannins (oligomeric phloroglucinol derivatives unique to brown algae), fucoidans (sulfated polysaccharides), alginates, vitamins (especially B-complex and C), and minerals including iodine, potassium, and magnesium. Key antioxidant compounds include fucoxanthin (a carotenoid giving brown algae its color), phlorotannins, and vitamin C. These compounds scavenge free radicals and chelate pro-oxidant metals, providing protection against UV-induced and environmental oxidative stress in skin.
Function
Skin benefits
- Fucoidans provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection
- Phlorotannins scavenge free radicals and chelate metals
- Mineral content supports skin metabolic functions
- Humectant properties from polysaccharides
- Film-forming may protect against environmental aggressors
Known concerns
- Iodine content may be a concern for individuals with thyroid conditions
- May contain heavy metal accumulation from marine environment if sourced from polluted waters
- Alginate film-forming may be comedogenic for some individuals at high concentrations
