About

A highly reactive, toxic three-membered heterocyclic amine ring used almost exclusively as an industrial chemical intermediate. It has no cosmetic use and poses severe health risks.

Aziridine (also known as ethylenimine) is a highly reactive, strained three-membered heterocycle with the formula C2H5N. It is used as an intermediate in chemical synthesis, particularly of polymers and pharmaceuticals. It is a known carcinogen (IARC Group 2A), causes severe skin burns and sensitization, and is highly toxic by inhalation and ingestion. Its reactivity makes it unsuitable for any cosmetic application. EU regulations restrict its presence in mixtures and prohibit its use in aerosols.

Skin benefits

  • No skin benefits — this is an industrial chemical intermediate with significant toxicity

Known concerns

  • EU severely restricted in cosmetics
  • Known carcinogen (IARC Group 2A)
