About
An aromatic azo compound with potential carcinogenic properties used primarily as a dye intermediate, restricted in cosmetic products above 0.1%.
Azobenzene is an azo compound used as an intermediate in dye and pigment synthesis. EU classification includes H341 (suspected mutagen) and H400/H410 (aquatic toxicity). The EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex III restricts azobenzene at ≥0.1% in cosmetic products. While primarily an industrial chemical, its azo bond structure raises concerns about potential reduction to aromatic amines, some of which are known carcinogens.
Known concerns
- Suspected mutagen H341
- Azo bond reduction concern
- Aquatic toxicity H400/H410
- Restricted to ≤0.1% in EU cosmetics
