About
A highly soluble barium salt — toxic if swallowed and capable of causing severe hypokalemia and cardiac effects — with no established use or safety justification in topical cosmetics.
Barium chloride (BaCl2) is an inorganic salt of barium with high water solubility, dissociating completely into Ba2+ and Cl- ions in aqueous solution. It is classified as a toxic substance — barium ions disrupt potassium channels, causing hypokalemia, skeletal muscle paralysis, and potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias at sufficient doses. The oral lethal dose is estimated at 1-15 g depending on individual factors. In cosmetic formulations, barium chloride would be reactive and could exchange barium ions with other formulation components. It has no recognized function in cosmetic chemistry and its presence appears anomalous in an ingredient database for skincare products. The soluble barium ion would be absorbed through damaged or compromised skin, posing a systemic toxicity risk that is not acceptable in topical consumer products.
Function
Known concerns
- EU Regulation 1272/2008: Acute toxicity (oral, dermal, inhalation)
- Severe health hazard: barium ion toxicity causes hypokalemia, cardiac arrhythmia, muscle paralysis
- Absorption through skin — risk increases with damaged skin barrier
- Not suitable for cosmetic use — should not be present in topical formulations
- Disposal of barium-containing products requires special handling
